To apply, you need a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) from a CRICOS-registered institution, a strong Genuine Student statement, evidence of financial capacity, and Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for your full stay. Refusals in 2026 most often come down to financial capacity or a weak Genuine Student response, not academic ability.
Minimum yearly living costs a single applicant must show in 2026, plus tuition and travel.
Subclass 500 visa application charge for the primary applicant, from 1 July 2026.
A strong pathway to Australian work experience after graduation through the Temporary Graduate visa.
The Student visa (Subclass 500) allows international students to study full-time at a registered Australian educational institution. It is issued by the Department of Home Affairs and generally covers the duration of your course, plus a short period before and after. It allows you to work a limited number of hours, include eligible family members, and travel in and out of Australia while it is valid.
Before applying, you must have a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) from a course and provider listed on CRICOS, the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students. Only CRICOS-registered courses can support a Subclass 500 application.
You must show genuine, verifiable access to enough money to support yourself in Australia. For 2026, the minimum living-cost benchmark for a single student is AUD $29,710 per year, in addition to your first year of tuition and your travel costs. The funds must be genuine and legally sourced; a balance inflated for the application and withdrawn afterwards is treated as fraud.
Additional living-cost amounts apply for accompanying family members, for example a partner and any school-age children. These figures are reviewed periodically, so always confirm the current amounts on the Department of Home Affairs website before applying.
Financial evidence is the top refusal reason: under the tightened 2026 rules, insufficient, unclear, or unverifiable funds are among the most common reasons Subclass 500 applications are refused, even when everything else is in order. We review your financial documents carefully before you lodge.
Since 23 March 2024, the Genuine Student (GS) requirement has replaced the former Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) test. It is one of the most heavily assessed parts of a Subclass 500 application. You respond to set questions within the online application, and the Department assesses your commitment to study, your circumstances in Sri Lanka, your financial situation, your immigration history, and your reasons for choosing your course, institution, and Australia.
At The Visa Central, we help students prepare a clear, honest, and specific Genuine Student response. A generic or copied statement is one of the most common reasons for refusal.
Working beyond your permitted hours is a breach of your visa conditions and can affect your status and future applications. Your primary purpose in Australia must remain study.
Graduates from eligible Australian institutions may apply for a Temporary Graduate visa (Subclass 485), which allows them to live and work in Australia for generally two to four years, depending on the qualification level. It grants full work rights and can serve as a pathway towards skilled migration and permanent residence.
From 1 July 2026, the Subclass 485 application charge increased to AUD $5,750 for the primary applicant. Eligibility rules and English requirements change periodically; confirm the current settings before relying on this pathway. Skilled migration and permanent residence are handled through separate immigration processes, and our guidance here is general information rather than a permanent-residence service.
