Sri Lankan passport holders are not eligible for Australia’s free eVisitor (Subclass 651) or low-cost ETA (Subclass 601), so you must apply for the full Subclass 600 visa. Refusals usually come down to weak ties to Sri Lanka, insufficient financial capacity, or a purpose of visit that is not clearly genuine, not the trip itself.
Tourist stream visa application charge, applied from outside Australia, per applicant (from 1 July 2026).
Usual length of stay granted, at the discretion of the Department of Home Affairs.
Recent median decision time for Tourist stream applications; complex cases take longer.
The Visitor visa (Subclass 600) is the main visa category for people travelling to Australia temporarily for tourism, to visit family, or for short business visitor activities. It is issued by the Department of Home Affairs and allows a stay of 3, 6, or 12 months, depending on the stream and the assessing officer’s decision.
The Subclass 600 does not permit paid work in Australia. Short recreational study of up to three months is generally allowed on the Tourist stream, but longer or formal study requires a Student visa (Subclass 500). Limited business activities, such as attending meetings, conferences, or negotiations, are allowed only under the Business Visitor stream.
No free electronic visa for Sri Lanka: the eVisitor (Subclass 651) and ETA (Subclass 601) are reserved for a specific list of European, North American, and a few Asia-Pacific passports. Sri Lankan citizens must apply for the full Subclass 600 visa online through ImmiAccount.
A Frequent Traveller stream also exists for eligible regular travellers, but it is invitation- or eligibility-based and priced much higher; most Sri Lankan applicants use the Tourist or Sponsored Family stream.
Holidays, sightseeing, leisure travel, or visiting relatives and friends. Common supporting documents include:
For applicants sponsored by a close family member who is an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen. It must be lodged from outside Australia and generally requires stronger sponsor documentation than the Tourist stream. In some cases the Department may require the sponsor to provide a security (bond).
For short, non-employment business activities such as attending conferences, meetings, or negotiating contracts. It does not permit work in the Australian labour market. Typical documents include a letter of invitation from the Australian business or event organiser, business registration and profile, and evidence of ongoing business in Sri Lanka.
The exact documents depend on your circumstances and stream. Most applications are assessed against these core requirements.
A valid passport with enough validity for your intended travel.
You must genuinely intend to visit temporarily and return home. The Department assesses your immigration history, your circumstances in Sri Lanka, and your reasons for travel. This is the single most important factor in most decisions.
Enough funds to support yourself during your stay, including travel, accommodation, and living costs. The amount depends on your travel plan and whether you stay in a hotel or with family.
Stable employment, business ownership, family responsibilities, or property help show that you will return.
You must meet health and character requirements. A health exam may be requested, and the visa may include Condition 8501, requiring adequate health insurance during your stay.
For a family visit or the Sponsored Family stream, an invitation letter from your host in Australia strengthens the application. It does not guarantee approval and should be supported by the host’s proof of status and, where relevant, financial documents. A strong letter should state:
If your application was refused, review the reasons carefully, correct the specific concerns with stronger evidence, and prepare a consistent new application. The Visa Central can review previous refusal cases and guide you where genuinely possible.
