Canada offers several different immigration categories. The two main pathways we assist Sri Lankan applicants with are:
For tourism, visiting family, attending events, or short business trips. Sri Lankan citizens generally require a visa to enter Canada; a stay of up to 6 months is typically authorised by the border officer on arrival.
For Sri Lankan students accepted into a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada for a program longer than 6 months.
A Canada Visitor Visa, officially called a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), is an official document placed in your passport by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). It allows you to travel to Canada for a temporary stay, typically for tourism, visiting family or friends, or attending business meetings.
Sri Lankan citizens are generally required to hold a valid TRV before travelling to Canada. Unlike citizens of some other countries, Sri Lankans are not currently eligible for the lower-cost Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) and must complete the full visitor visa application process.
Most approved visitors are authorised to stay in Canada for up to 6 months per visit, although the exact period is determined by the border services officer at the port of entry.
A standard Temporary Resident Visa for sightseeing, leisure travel, or seeing relatives and friends living in Canada. It can be issued for single or multiple entries. Common supporting documents may include:
A special multiple-entry visa exclusively for parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents. It allows stays of up to 5 years per visit, with a total validity of up to 10 years. Key requirements include:
IRCC updated how the host’s income is assessed, including the ability to use either of the two most recent tax years or supplement the host’s income with the visiting parent’s own income in qualifying cases.
For meetings, conferences, negotiations, or site visits, without entering the Canadian labour market. Common documents may include:
The exact documents required depend on your personal circumstances, purpose of travel, financial background, and travel history. Most applications require strong evidence in these areas.
A valid passport, ideally with at least 6 months’ validity remaining beyond your planned travel date.
You must be in good health and have no criminal or immigration-related convictions that would make you inadmissible to Canada. A medical exam may be requested in some cases.
Strong ties, such as employment, business, family, or property, that will bring you back to Sri Lanka at the end of your visit.
Enough funds to support your stay. The amount depends on the length of your stay and whether you will stay in a hotel or with friends or relatives.
You must convince the officer that you intend to leave Canada at the end of your authorised visit.
A letter of invitation is written by a Canadian citizen or permanent resident inviting a friend, family member, or business associate to visit. IRCC does not strictly mandate it for every application, but it significantly strengthens a visitor visa application, particularly for family visits. It does not guarantee approval and should be supported by the host’s proof of status and, where relevant, financial documents. A strong letter should mention:
A Canada study permit is an official document issued by IRCC that authorises a foreign national to study at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada. A study permit is required for most programs longer than 6 months.
Canada continues to apply a national cap on new international student study permit applications. For 2026, IRCC has allocated 309,670 study permit application spaces for applicants who require a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL), with an overall target of issuing up to approximately 408,000 study permits across new and returning students.
As of January 1, 2026, master’s and doctoral students enrolled at a public DLI are exempt from the PAL/TAL requirement. Most college, undergraduate, and non-degree post-secondary applicants still require one.
You must demonstrate that you, without working illegally in Canada, can pay for tuition, living expenses, and return travel for yourself and any accompanying family members.
For applications submitted on or after September 1, 2025, the cost-of-living threshold for a single applicant studying outside Quebec is CAD $22,895 for the first year, in addition to full first-year tuition and travel costs. This figure is reviewed periodically by IRCC, so always confirm the current amount before applying.
The Study Direct Stream is a faster processing option that has been available to eligible applicants meeting specific requirements, including a Canadian GIC, upfront tuition payment, and a qualifying language test score. Program availability and eligibility can change, so our team can help you confirm the current options and assess whether faster processing routes apply to your situation.
A well-prepared SOP helps the visa officer understand your academic background, your reasons for choosing your specific program and institution, your financial plan, and your intention to return to Sri Lanka after completing your studies (or your understanding of post-study work pathways, where relevant).
At The Visa Central, we help students structure their SOP clearly and honestly, avoiding generic or copied content.
Many international students apply for a PGWP to gain Canadian work experience after completing their studies. Eligibility rules, particularly the eligible field-of-study list for non-degree programs, can change. We strongly recommend confirming your program’s PGWP eligibility before enrolling, not after.
Refusals often happen because the application does not clearly demonstrate the applicant’s purpose, financial position, eligibility, or intention to comply with Canadian immigration law.
Documents do not clearly show stable employment, ongoing studies, business ownership, property, or close family responsibilities that would bring the applicant back.
Unexplained large deposits, statements that don’t match declared income, or funds below the required threshold, especially for study permits.
A vague explanation of why you are travelling, or an SOP that does not connect your program to your background and future goals.
Study permit applications that require a PAL/TAL but do not include one will typically be returned as incomplete.
Differences between the application form, supporting letters, financial documents, and other evidence.
Reapplying with the same documents, without addressing the specific reasons in the refusal letter, will likely lead to another refusal.
If your Canada visitor visa or study permit application was refused, you should not rush into reapplying with the same documents. The Visa Central can review previous Canadian refusal cases and guide applicants on how to strengthen a fresh application where genuinely possible.

Yes. Sri Lankan citizens are generally required to obtain a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) before travelling to Canada; Sri Lanka is not currently on Canada’s eTA-eligible list.
Most tourists apply for the standard Temporary Resident Visa (visitor visa) under the Canada Visitor Visa category.
Yes, the standard visitor visa can be used to visit family or friends, provided the purpose and supporting documents are clear and a letter of invitation is recommended.
In most cases, visitors are authorised to stay in Canada for up to 6 months per visit, as determined by the border services officer on arrival.
The Super Visa is a special long-stay visa exclusively for parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents, allowing stays of up to 5 years per visit.
There is no single fixed amount for everyone. Your funds should reasonably support your travel plan, duration of stay, and personal circumstances.
It is not always mandatory, but a well-written letter of invitation from your host significantly strengthens family visit applications.
A DLI is a Canadian school, college, or university approved by a provincial or territorial government to host international students. Only DLIs can issue acceptance letters that support a study permit application.
For applications submitted from September 1, 2025 onward, a single applicant outside Quebec must generally show at least CAD $22,895 in living costs, in addition to full first-year tuition and travel costs. This figure is reviewed periodically by IRCC.
A PAL is a letter from a province or territory confirming that a study permit applicant has a spot under that province’s allocation of the national study permit cap. Most college and undergraduate applicants need one; most master’s and doctoral students at public DLIs do not.
Many graduates become eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), which allows them to gain Canadian work experience, subject to meeting program length, language, and (for non-degree programs) field-of-study requirements.
You should review the refusal reasons carefully and prepare a stronger application addressing the specific concerns raised before reapplying.
Yes. We can review your refusal letter and guide you on how to strengthen a new application where genuinely possible.
Travel history can support an application, but it is not the only deciding factor. Your full circumstances are considered by the visa officer.
A relative cannot directly “sponsor” a study permit or visitor visa, but they can provide a letter of invitation, financial support, or act as a Super Visa host where eligible.
We provide professional guidance, document support, application assistance, and submission guidance based on the service package selected.
No. No consultant can guarantee visa or study permit approval. The final decision is made by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and, at the border, by the CBSA.
Because we focus on transparency, genuine advice, professional document review, and personalised support for Canada visitor visa and study permit applications.
Yes. Most applicants from Sri Lanka provide biometrics (fingerprints and a photo) at the Canada Visa Application Centre in Colombo, operated by VFS Global, as part of the application.
In some cases, accompanying family members may apply for their own visas or permits. Eligibility and any work rights depend on your study program and current IRCC rules, which we can help you review.
