For tourism, visiting family or friends, attending events, or short business trips. Sri Lankan citizens are not on New Zealand’s visa-waiver (NZeTA) list and generally must apply for a full Visitor Visa before travelling.
For Sri Lankan students accepted into an NZQA-approved education provider for a course longer than three months.
A New Zealand Visitor Visa is issued by Immigration New Zealand (INZ) and allows you to travel to New Zealand for a temporary stay, typically for tourism, visiting family or friends, or attending business meetings. Sri Lankans cannot travel on the lower-cost NZeTA alone and must complete the full Visitor Visa application.
A Visitor Visa is issued as single-entry or multiple-entry, based on INZ’s assessment. In most cases visitors can stay up to a maximum of 9 months within an 18-month period, though the exact period is set by INZ.
Everyone travelling to New Zealand must also complete a New Zealand Traveller Declaration (NZTD) before arrival. This is separate from your visa and covers customs, immigration, and biosecurity details.
A standard Visitor Visa for sightseeing, leisure travel, or visiting relatives and friends. It can be issued for single or multiple entries. Common supporting documents may include:
A multiple-entry visa for parents and grandparents of New Zealand citizens or residents. It allows longer combined stays than a standard visitor visa, generally up to 6 months per visit, with a maximum of 18 months within a 3-year period. Sponsorship by the New Zealand-based family member and evidence of the relationship are usually required.
For meetings, conferences, or negotiations, without taking up employment in New Zealand. Common documents may include:
Applicants travelling for private medical treatment may need additional evidence, including treatment details, a letter from the New Zealand provider, cost estimates, and proof of ability to pay for treatment and stay.
The exact documents depend on your circumstances, purpose of travel, financial background, and travel history. Most applications require strong evidence in these areas.
A valid passport, generally valid for at least 3 months beyond the date you plan to leave New Zealand.
You must satisfy INZ that you are a genuine visitor who will leave at the end of your authorised stay.
Employment, business, family, or property that will bring you back to Sri Lanka.
INZ generally expects at least NZD $1,000 per month of your stay, or NZD $400 per month if your accommodation is already paid for.
You must meet INZ’s health and character requirements. A medical examination may be requested in some cases.
Any document that is not in English must be submitted with a certified English translation.
A Fee Paying Student Visa is issued by INZ and authorises you to study at an approved education provider in New Zealand. It is generally required for any full-time course lasting more than three months. The institution must be recognised by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA).
You must show you can pay for living costs, tuition, and travel. General guidance current at the time of research; always confirm on immigration.govt.nz before applying.
INZ runs a Funds Transfer Scheme, administered by ANZ Bank New Zealand, for students from a small number of countries, including Sri Lanka. It is a secure way to transfer and demonstrate your living-costs funds. INZ will let you know if you need to use it. It does not guarantee approval, but for eligible Sri Lankan students it can be a strong way to evidence genuine, accessible funds.
Many Fee Paying Student Visa holders may work part-time during term and full-time during scheduled breaks, subject to the conditions printed on the visa. You cannot rely on projected earnings to meet the funds requirement; funds must be shown before you arrive.
A well-prepared SOP helps the officer understand your academic background, why you chose your course and institution, your financial plan, and your genuine intentions. We help students structure it clearly and honestly, avoiding generic or copied content.
Some graduates apply for a Post-Study Work Visa to gain New Zealand work experience. This is a separate application with Immigration New Zealand, and eligibility rules can change, so confirm your qualification’s eligibility on immigration.govt.nz before you enrol.
Refusals often happen because the application does not clearly demonstrate the applicant’s purpose, financial position, or genuine intentions.
Documents that don’t clearly show employment, business, property, or family responsibilities.
Large unexplained deposits, funds that don’t match declared income, or amounts below the threshold; particularly common for student visas.
INZ is not satisfied that the primary purpose (a real visit, or genuine study) is genuine.
Differences between the application form, supporting letters, and financial documents.
Documents not in English without a certified translation, or a missing required document.
For example, an unclear offer of place or a shortfall in the required funds.
Reapplying with the same documents, without addressing the concerns raised.
If your New Zealand visitor or student visa application was refused, you should not rush into reapplying with the same documents. The Visa Central can review previous New Zealand refusal cases and guide applicants on how to strengthen a fresh application where genuinely possible.
