UK student applications are refused most often for financial and documentation reasons, not academic ones. The maintenance funds, the strict 28-day rule, and the exact format of your evidence all matter.
Application fee from outside the UK (from 8 April 2026), plus the Immigration Health Surcharge.
Required funds must be held for 28 consecutive days without dropping below the amount.
Usual decision time after biometrics.
The UK Student visa (previously Tier 4 General) is the main route for international students aged 16 or over to study a course longer than 6 months at a licensed UK education provider. It covers higher education courses such as bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees, and PhDs, as well as certain further education and pre-sessional courses.
Your course must be with an institution that holds a Student sponsor licence and can issue you a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS). For short courses of 6 months or less, a Standard Visitor visa may be more appropriate; we can help you confirm the correct route.
You can usually apply from outside the UK up to 6 months before your course starts.
This is the most important part of the application for most Sri Lankan students. Sri Lanka is not on the UK’s ‘differential evidence’ list, so Sri Lankan applicants must provide financial evidence with their application.
Show enough money for your first year’s course fees (or the full course if shorter). The amount, and anything already paid, is stated on your CAS. If you paid a deposit, only the outstanding balance needs to be shown.
On top of tuition, living costs for up to 9 months at the GOV.UK rates, plus extra funds for each eligible dependant.
Funds must be held in your account (or a parent’s, with a consent letter and proof of relationship) for at least 28 consecutive days, never dropping below the required amount, with the closing balance dated within 31 days of your application. Cash-based accounts only (current, savings, accessible fixed deposits); shares and pensions are not accepted.
Maintenance figures and the deposit on your CAS determine the exact total. Always confirm current rates on GOV.UK (gov.uk/student-visa/money) and calculate against your own CAS.
Course fee £14,000 with a £5,000 deposit paid. Outstanding tuition £9,000 + living costs £10,539 = £19,539, held for 28 consecutive days.
Course fee £17,000 with a £5,000 deposit paid. Outstanding tuition £12,000 + living costs £13,761 = £25,761, held for 28 consecutive days.
You must prove your knowledge of English when you apply. For degree-level courses, this usually means level B2; for below-degree courses, level B1. You can meet this through an approved Secure English Language Test (SELT), a qualifying English-taught qualification, or in some cases an assessment by your education provider. We can help you confirm the right option for your course.
A unique reference number issued by your licensed provider once you accept an offer. It is valid for use within 6 months, and your application must match its details.
Applicants from Sri Lanka must provide a valid TB test certificate from an approved clinic for visas of more than 6 months, which includes most Student visas.
Some postgraduate courses in sensitive science, engineering, and technology subjects need an ATAS certificate before you apply. Your university will tell you.
A valid passport and a digital photo that meets UK requirements, plus previous passports where relevant.
This is a general checklist. Your final list depends on your course, level, and circumstances.

UK visa fees are set by the Home Office and were last updated on 8 April 2026. General guidance only; always confirm the current fee and health surcharge on GOV.UK. The IHS gives you NHS access and is calculated on your visa length; for example, a 3-year course generally means around £2,328 in IHS. VFS Global charges are separate. All visa fees are non-refundable.
Most degree-level students can work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during official holidays. You cannot claim public funds or work in certain restricted jobs.
Only students on postgraduate research programmes (such as a PhD or research master’s) or government-sponsored courses of at least 6 months can bring dependants. Taught master’s and undergraduate students generally cannot.
Stay in the UK to work or look for work without employer sponsorship, applying from inside the UK after completion. For most bachelor’s and master’s graduates applying on or before 31 December 2026, it lasts 2 years; from 1 January 2027, 18 months. PhD graduates receive 3 years. It cannot be extended, but many graduates move into a Skilled Worker visa.
If your application was refused, do not simply reapply with the same documents. Review the refusal reasons, correct the specific issues, and prepare a stronger, consistent application. The Visa Central can review previous refusal cases and guide you where genuinely possible.
No visa consultant in Sri Lanka, or anywhere else, can guarantee a visa. Any consultancy that promises guaranteed approval should be treated with caution. The final decision always rests with UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI).
