You complete the online DS-160, pay the visa application (MRV) fee, and attend an in-person interview at the U.S. Embassy in Colombo. Most refusals happen at the interview under Section 214(b), when the officer is not satisfied the applicant will return home.
MRV fee. A fee increase has been introduced in 2026, so confirm the current amount.
Typical interview length. The officer focuses on your purpose of travel and your ties to Sri Lanka.
Usual length of each stay, decided by a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer on arrival.
The B1/B2 is a combined nonimmigrant visa for temporary travel to the United States. The B1 covers business visitor activities such as meetings, conferences, and negotiations; the B2 covers tourism, holidays, visiting family or friends, and medical treatment. Most applicants receive a combined B1/B2 visa.
A visitor visa does not permit paid work or long-term study in the United States. The visa’s validity and number of entries depend on the reciprocity schedule for Sri Lankan nationals; the length of each stay is decided by a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer at the port of entry, usually up to six months.
Valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay in the United States.
The backbone of your case. Every detail must be accurate and consistent; you must also list the social media handles you have used in recent years.
The heart of the decision: stable employment, business ownership, property, family responsibilities, or ongoing studies in Sri Lanka.
Show that you (or your sponsor) can fund the trip with bank statements, income evidence and, for a sponsored visit, the sponsor’s documents.
A specific, genuine purpose, such as a holiday plan, a family event or a conference, is stronger than a vague one.
For most applicants, the interview is the deciding moment, and it is usually only a few minutes long.
What Section 214(b) means: US law presumes every visitor applicant intends to immigrate until they prove otherwise. A 214(b) refusal means the officer was not satisfied you would return home. It is not a permanent ban; you may reapply when your circumstances or your ability to demonstrate ties have genuinely strengthened.
Your answers must match your DS-160 exactly. Review your form beforehand and be ready to explain your purpose of travel, your funding, and your ties to Sri Lanka clearly and consistently.
Answer truthfully, keep answers short and clear, and let your genuine ties speak for themselves. Do not memorise scripted speeches; officers can tell, and rehearsed answers can hurt you. Stay calm, be polite, and have your documents organised in case they are requested.
A refusal is not necessarily the end. We can review what happened and help you prepare a stronger case where your circumstances genuinely support reapplying.

General guidance only; confirm current amounts on travel.state.gov before paying.
A USD $250 Visa Integrity Fee was created by 2025 U.S. legislation and is payable at visa issuance (only if approved). As of mid-2026 it was not yet being collected while the mechanism is finalised, but implementation is expected. Budget for it and confirm the current status on travel.state.gov.
No visa consultant in Sri Lanka, or anywhere else, can guarantee a visa. Any consultancy that promises guaranteed approval should be treated with caution. The final decision always rests with a U.S. consular officer at the interview, under U.S. law.
What we do promise is professional preparation, clear advice and honest guidance at every step.

It is an administrative-processing outcome where the officer needs more documents or checks before deciding. It is not a final refusal.

Under a U.S. pilot programme, applicants from certain designated countries may be asked to post a refundable bond if approved. Check the current State Department bond list for whether it applies.
